President's Welcome

Dear CC Members and Friends:
As we start our season into Fall, it is a time to ponder what is leaving us, and what will blossom again in the Spring. Many of you may have traveled this Summer and are now anticipating the activities and programs ahead of us.
October 2, 2024 begins with the Fall Gathering. This will bring old connections and perhaps some new ones as we investigate what CC Interest Groups might be open to explore, and perhaps make new friends or reunite with old friends. CC’s own Fiat Musica will perform, always bringing us original choral arrangements from the heart. Members will speak about open Interest Groups and there will be time to enjoy the potluck lunch brought to you by members of the CC Board of Directors. Guests are always welcome.

I look forward to seeing all of you at this first meeting of the year as I start my third year as President. I hope that when my term ends at the end of 2026, we will have chosen a new President. I will remain on the CC Board and will guide anyone interested in taking over this task. It is an enriching and enlightening job.
On November 6, 2024, CC Speaker Meeting will again be at the Arboretum and feature Kelly Weisberg, UC Law San Francisco Professor, and wife of former Chancellor George Blumenthal. She will speak to us on “Mindfulness for Seniors and Senior Moments”.
January 15, 2025 will feature speaker George Ow, a Santa Cruz resident who grew up in the area of Santa Cruz called Chinatown. He will talk of the history of Chinatown in Santa Cruz.
One of the highly anticipated events in 2025 will be our Intercampus Gathering on March 26, 2025. UC Davis, UC Merced and UC Berkeley Friends Groups will come to UCSC at the Arboretum to share common goals, challenges and make connections. CC will need members to help with this event, there will be specific sign-up sheets for assignments for that day.
Thanks to everyone who responded to the survey about our meetings that First VP Dennis Cavaille distributed. We are excited to incorporate everyone’s ideas. One suggestion encouraged us to skip a speaker and provide more time for socializing and networking. We will do this on April 16, 2025 and we will not meet on April 2, 2025.
Let’s all get together on October 2, 2024, and during the ensuing academic year,
